Even before the catastrophic earthquake in early 2010, Haiti’s water conditions already ranked as the worst in the Western Hemisphere; and the massive disaster has only magnified the problem. Not only creating access to water itself, but creating access to safe, clean water is more essential now than ever before. With tens of thousands of people still living in refugee camps, providing safe, clean water is essential for healthy lives and disease prevention.
In our effort to make clean water a reality in Haiti, we are focusing on water filtration, well-repair and drilling. Bio-Sand Filters are proving to be a highly effective means of water purification. Especially in the wake of the massive earthquake, filtration of any water source has become highly necessary. We are committed to building, delivering, and implementing Bio-Sand Filters throughout Haiti. Additionally, we are partnering with local agencies to train Haitians through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programs. Proper hygiene education is one of the greatest partners to safe, clean water access.
In addition to our primary focus on Bio-Sand filters, we are distributing ceramic filters in urban areas to eliminate pathogens in the distributed water. Like the Bio-Sand filters, these ceramic filters are built and distributed in Haiti by local Haitians. Not only are we working hard to bring water solutions, we are intentional about supporting local economies as well.
